Thorium: Rethinking Nuclear Power

OVERVIEW
The last few years have seen an enormous amount of interest in finding alternative, “green” sources of energy. It is viewed as both a national security issue (reliance on fossil fuels sold by unsavory governments) and a sustainability/environmental issue. Nuclear power has its supporters, but the disaster at Fukushima reminded the world of the dangers involved in a melt down.
Uranium, however, is not the only answer. Enter thorium. Thorium is a natural element that is four times more abundant than uranium, and it has been proven as an effective, safer power source than our current nuclear operations.
Our presenter will be Robert Morse, who spoke at the 2009 Thorium Energy Alliance Conference in Washington, D.C. Robert is a certified high-tech geek and currently works with a local defense contractor. Robert earned his Bachelors degree in science engineering from Northwestern University. As an undergraduate, he updated nuclear reactor accident analysis computer codes at the Idaho Nuclear Engineering Laboratory during the summer. Later, he designed and analyzed power plant systems in nuclear and coal power plants.
Most of his career has been with high-tech startups and the product development branch of established firms. He contributed to laser systems the size of this building, to lithographic x-ray sources, multiband targeting and ranging lasers, airborne optical reconnaissance systems, and high power laser weapons systems. Some of his parts may be orbiting around Saturn on the Cassini spacecraft.
